End-to-End Quality of Experience Town Hall Innovation Series, Spring 2025

“Collaboration with Content Application Providers is essential for Broadband Service Providers to improve QoE-based assurance with application information” was one of the key takeaways during the End-to-End Quality of Experience Town Hall Innovation Series.

Following the presentations, the open discussion led by Mauro Tilocca, FiberCop, highlighted that there is not a one‑size‑fits‑all network to ensure QoE for today’s widened application and use case scenarios. However, a greater understanding of application QoE, more sophisticated methodologies linking QoS with QoE, and the anticipated collaboration between global telco providers and application providers will form a stronger foundation for success. Tilocca also stressed the importance of the Broadband Forum demonstrating value to application providers and encouraging their participation in its open standards work and open software projects.

“Users care if their video conference, gaming, or video stream works. They usually don’t care about ping times or their speed test results,” Domos Head of Research Bjorn Ivar Teigen Monclair said. During the presentation, Monclair pointed out that quality is emerging as a selling point, with broadband service providers beginning to communicate the benefits of lower latency to customers. Quality of Experience (QoE) is very hard to measure as there are many broadband metrics per service that the Broadband Service Provider (BSP) must consider, Futurewei Principal Standards Guru Ken Kerpez said. Kerpez called for the Broadband Forum membership to get involved in the new Services Requirements work area as the organization begins to provide guidance on the requirements relevant for the industry to seamlessly transition to intelligent, services-led broadband. “Automation is inevitable”, Nokia Head of End-to-End AutoX Solutions & Innovations Kurt Pynaert advised. “And it can be used to monetize and optimize networks.” The combination of end-users becoming more demanding alongside BSPs wanting to differentiate their service offerings means that intelligent automation must be embraced. “Insights from network devices are crucial for understanding QoE and the ability to predict future network behavior is even more vital,” advised Motive Product Director Colin Grealish. He explored how advancements in 5G can be applied to technologies enabling wireless-wireline convergence to allow CSPs to assess Quality of Experience (QoE) through data collection. Bridging the gap between QoE and QoS can ensure better service quality for applications such as video streaming, gaming, and real time communications. But when trialing a new technology, Vodafone Broadband Architect Mayur Channegowda explained, lab and field trials don’t tell the whole story. It is difficult to gauge if the user will actually receive better QoE. It’s important that we can understand how infrastructure performance translates to QoE. Read the full article here: https://www.broadband-forum.org/bridging-the-gap-application-qoe-and-network-performance-metrics

Huawei Chief Architect for Optical Access Networks Fan Xu started his presentation on using intelligence to deliver premium broadband by sharing insight on two key trends that are affecting the way QoE is delivered and optimized: FTTx and AI. On FTTx, Fan Xu identified three ‘waves’ redefining the broadband business. China Unicom Fixed Access Network and home Networking Expert Ding Hai highlighted the need for a new broadband quality evaluation system during his presentation. He emphasized that the current focus on Quality of Service (QoS) must shift to Quality of Experience (QoE) to meet the demands of next-generation broadband networks. Future broadband access and home networks promise higher bandwidth, lower latency, and greater stability. More importantly, it will enhance connectivity capabilities and elevate end-to-end service experience, unlocking new business opportunities for network operators.
