CEO's note
October was a busy month for the Broadband Forum team, packed with engaging webinars and events including Network X. It was a privilege to join so many experts and industry stalwarts in Paris and an invaluable opportunity to deepen connections and engage in meaningful discussions about the future of broadband.
During the event, we had the pleasure of hosting a series of BASe workshops and the Broadband Forum Innovations Demonstrations, which spotlighted new network technologies set to advance services-led broadband for operators.
We’re coming to the end of the year, but there’re no plans to slow down - our Fall 2024 Member Meeting in San Diego is just around the corner! Make sure you register soon and remember that guest passes are still available for colleagues interested in attending. For more details, please contact Rhonda Heier at [email protected]. Your participation is invaluable as we discuss the latest developments in our industry and drive forward services-led broadband. - Craig Thomas, CEO at Broadband Forum

News and Updates
- Testing Wi-Fi devices is crucial for manufacturers, playing a significant role in guaranteeing a seamless end user experience, and, ultimately, ensuring service differentiation for ISPs. In its latest blog, our trusted device testing partner UNH InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) explored this topic, highlighting the significance of testing Wi-Fi devices. Read the full blog here.
- Still not convinced to get involved with BASe? Read the latest BBF blog in which Bernd Hesse, Chief Marketing Officer of the Board of Directors at Broadband Forum, explains how the BASe series helps broadband industry professionals navigate the shift towards services-led networks. The BASe series recently participated in Network X, where the Broadband Forum hosted three engaging BASe workshops. Read the full blog and learn more about the value of these sessions here.
- The Broadband Forum’s Fall 2024 Town Hall Innovation Series session will explore the convergence of Smart Home and IoT in multi-service broadband networks. Topics include service provisioning, revenue opportunities for providers, privacy and security, AI applications, and more. Find more information on the session and how to register here.
- At Network X, the Broadband Forum Innovation Demonstrations introduced real-world solutions to enhance broadband services through automation, QoE improvements, and rapid deployment capabilities. Some new and first-time use cases were demonstrated, such as the ‘OB-CAS: Alarm Correlation App’, and ‘Wireless Wireline Convergence with 5G-RG and Integrated AGF/UPF’. You can watch an overview of the demonstrations here.
- The broadband industry is increasingly more competitive, demanding the integration of global broadband standards and open-source software to simplify network operations. Tom Van Caenegem, Technology Lead of Fixed Access at Nokia and OB-CAS Project Lead at Broadband Forum, has explored how OB-CAS helps service providers improve user experience, reduce costs, and increase ARPU through enhanced network monitoring and data analysis. Read the full blog here.
- Aprecomm recently launched a new software stack, integrated with major broadband CPE silicon platforms to enhance device management and performance. This update, supported by Broadband Forum’s TR-369 protocol, allows service providers to manage devices more efficiently with real-time control, cloud management, and improved customer experience. Technology Spotlight
L4S
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput, or L4S technology is critical for enhancing broadband network performance, particularly for latency-sensitive applications such as cloud gaming, video conferencing, and extended reality. By providing real-time congestion feedback and implementing scalable control mechanisms, L4S can deliver high throughput while minimizing delays, even in congested network conditions. This capability is crucial as users increasingly demand seamless, interactive experiences.
The importance of low latency technology is evidenced by events such as the Broadband Forum’s BASe series, without which effective virtual participation would be impossible. By ensuring minimal delays, L4S enhances user experiences during real-time interactions, making it possible for participants to fully engage in the discussions.
If you are interested in taking part in the project and driving this work forward, please contact [email protected] to join as an editor or contributor. You can also learn more about the project here.
