The Headlines

CEO’s note

We’re excited to reconnect with familiar faces next week at Network X. Join us as the Broadband Forum showcases its Broadband Forum Innovations Demonstrations and hosts a dynamic series of BASe workshops right at the Broadband Forum Pavilion, stand C46. Don’t miss out on the opportunities to learn, share, and innovate together!

We will see new and first-time use cases demonstrated such as the ‘OB-CAS: Alarm Correlation App’, and ‘Wireless Wireline Convergence with 5G-RG and Integrated AGF/UPF’. The former will highlight the importance of the Forum’s Open Broadband projects – OB-CAS in this case – in bringing together open source and open standards to accelerate broadband innovation and interoperability.

Also, fast approaching is our Fall Meeting in San Diego, California! Make sure to register for the meeting now, as well as our Smart Home and IoT focused Town Hall Innovation Series.

The Broadband Forum Pavilion will be returning to this year’s Network X on October 8-10 at Porte De Versailles, Paris. The Broadband Forum’s Innovation Demonstrations will be a focal point for this year’s pavilion. Thank you to the participating members that are making this happen; 5×9 Networks, Adtran, Altice Labs, Axyom Core, BISDN, Condor Technologies, Deutsche Telekom, Incognito Software Systems, University of New Hampshire IOL (UNH-IOL), Net Reply, Netsia, Nokia, OutSys, and Zyxel.

Ahead of Network X, Craig Thomas will join the ‘Standards Organizations roundtable: How prpl helps bridge and complements’ at the Global prpl Summit on October 7 at Palais des Congrès de Issy-Les-Moulineaux, Paris. Register for the summit here.

News and Updates

In the build up to Network X, Ken Pyle, Director of Marketing, explored the importance of the Broadband Forum’s activities at the event in our roadmap to services-led broadband. The Broadband Forum will showcase six – with two first-time – innovating use cases, that are driving QoE, improving network efficiency and performance, and accelerating time-to-market of new services for service providers. You can read more about BBF’s activities at Network X here. Take a look at a sneak peek of the demos here.

More devices, more demanding applications, and more connected users are adding complexity to our networks as we respond to greater requirements. Tom Van Caenegem, Technology Lead on Fixed Access at Nokia, discussed how Broadband Forum’s latest open broadband project, OB-CAS, is enabling improved network maintenance and monitoring, processing of data and associated recommendations, allowing service providers to offer improved end user experience, reduce operating costs and increase ARPU. A use case enabled by the open broadband project will be on display at Network X next week! You can read the full blog here.

The Broadband Forum launched a roadmap that promises to guide ISPs through the phased deployment of L4S into their broadband networks. L4S will enable service providers to offer services to subscribers that can support applications with latency and capacity demands at the same time and at the same network bottleneck. Fixed, mobile and satellite broadband markets are all experiencing common pain points. Success and competition in selling speed has driven down the price of connectivity and broadband packages. And no matter how cheap or fast these offerings are, they still do not meet customer demand for a seamless connectivity experience. You can read Craig Thomas’ key takeaways and insights from last month’s Strategies in Satellite Ground Segment 2024 here.

In an editorial article for Tech Radar, Craig Thomas highlighted the shift in focus for ISPs from being simply utility providers, of speed and connectivity, to offering holistic and services-led broadband. The article also delved into the storied history of TR-069 and the transition to USP (TR-369). You can read the full article here.

The ‘Service Differentiation and App Provider Relationships’ vBASe Webinar produced some interesting conversations on the advancements in QoE, slicing, and service differentiation. During the webinar, Len Ciavattone at AT&T Labs discussed the latest updates on Broadband Forum’s OB-UDPST project that is paving the way for greater speed and latency measurements by providing greater visibility into network impairments. You can receive a copy of the slide deck and recording here.

Technology Spotlight

Open Broadband

The Broadband Forum’s Open Broadband initiative brings together the best ideas from open source and open standards, paving the way for operators to lead with services, and bring the full promise of broadband to fruition.

These projects deliver open-source reference implementations, which are examples of how Broadband Forum specifications should be implemented, acting as a starting point for application developers to base their implementations on.

Upcoming Events

Get involved in our most recent projects!

BUS: Mapping Subscriber Network Topology with TR-181 – The project aims to describe the use cases and benefits of subscriber network topology mapping. This will provide ISPs with the ability to visualize and understand the physical and logical layout of their network, in relation to the subscriber and their connection. ISPs will be able to improve customer satisfaction and prepare for future challenges with greater operational efficiency.

BUS: Matter Service Data Model for USP Enabled Devices – The project aims to define the data model necessary to implement this function on USP Agents. It will provide ISPs with the tools to enhance their service offerings, reduce operational costs, and better meet the evolving needs and the integration of Matter devices in the connected home.
