CEO’s note
We’re celebrating 20 years of TR-069, our revolutionary device management standard that has become an integral part of internet service provider deployments. I’d like to congratulate and commemorate the dedicated group of people that provided the pivotal contributions for this industry cornerstone back in 2004.
As we transition further into the ‘Application Age’ of broadband, we must now look to USP that builds on the blueprint that TR-069 has engrained on remote device management. Its improvements make it better suited to meet the demands of modern network environments.
It was great to see a lot of familiar faces at last month’s Network X Americas and I look forward to seeing more of you at the Summer Member Meeting in Incheon, South Korea later this month.

News and Updates
- Amidst the festivities of TR-069’s landmark anniversary, Broadband User Services (BUS) Work Area Co-Director at Broadband Forum and key contributor to the protocol, Jason Walls caught up with Brandon Vigliarolo at The Register to discuss the lifespan of TR-069 and the need to transition to USP (TR-369). You can find the full article and interview here. For more on Jason’s experience in developing TR-069, its significance to the industry, and the future that USP will shape you can read his blog here or listen to his introduction at this year’s USP summit here.
- Broadband Forum CEO Craig Thomas was at Network X Americas to deliver a keynote titled ‘From a Connected to a Services-Led Broadband America’. The presentation discussed how and why operators are shifting toward a 'services-led' or ‘connectivity+’ model and strategies that put more focus on apps and services. At the event, Craig spoke to Jeff Baumgartner at Light Reading to delve deeper into the critical role of open source platforms and industry standards in achieving rapid deployment of these new services and applications. You can find the full article and interview here.
- The core message of the ‘Future of the Connected Building’ vBASe Webinar was that operators need a “toolbox of solutions” to overcome the connectivity challenges associated with serving broadband to Multi Dwelling Units (MDUs). At the same time, those tools need to follow key industry standards for a seamless integration into the operator’s larger network and to enable efficient monitoring of the whole network. You can read about the key takeaways from the webinar with Dr Xuming Wu, Chief Engineer at Huawei Technologies; Helge Tiainen, Director Business Development at InCoax; and Paul Spruyt, Technology Strategist at Nokia, here.
Technology Spotlight
TR-069
First introduced in 2004, TR-069 – also known as the CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP) - has become an integral part of ISP deployments. By providing an interface for the remote configuration and management of user devices, TR-069 has streamlined service provisioning and reduced operational expenditures for ISPs. It served as the bedrock, setting the stage for increased efficiency and reliability in broadband services. It now has more than a billion deployments worldwide.
With the enormous leap forward into application management and enhanced network management capabilities, it is now time to shift toward a more agile, distributed, robust, and secure network infrastructure with USP. All while leveraging the expertise and experience gained with TR-069.
