BASe @ Fiber Connect 2025

Date: June 1, 2025 8:00 am — June 4, 2025 5:00 pm Location: Gaylord Opryland, Nashville Tennessee

The Broadband Forum will be holding four BASe workshops at Fiber Connect 2025. The workshops will be focused on the following hot topics:

State of the Art Fiber Access Technologies

Monday, June 2 – 1pm – 2:10pm
Location: Bayou E

With continued increase in bandwidth demand throughout the network, thanks to demands across industry verticals, what are the implications for fiber access technologies? Encompassing XGS-PON, 25G, 50G, and Coherent PON, this panel will take examine today’s state-of-the-art, fiber access technology options. Panelists will bring their perspective on the bandwidth and latency needs to assure service across different market segments.

Including presentations from:

  • ‘Fiber Reality Check 2025’ – Andreas Flach, Technology lead, Business Development Fiber, Nokia Fixed Networks, Nokia
  • ‘Accelerating FTTH Rollouts: Scalable Automation to Overcome Workforce and Deployment Challenges’ – Guillaume Lavallée, Manager – Optical Instruments, T&M Mobile & Cloud Solutions, EXFO
  • ‘Coherent PON and the Broadband Eras’ – Kevin Noll, Principal Architect, CableLabs
  • ‘Managing the PON Life Cycle’ – Dr Frank Effenberger, Fellow, Futurewei

How to Architect a Monetized Network

Monday, June 2 – 2:15pm – 3:30pm
Location: Bayou E

Whether residential, enterprise, mobile, data center, smart agriculture, or smart city, service providers must be ready to adapt to ever changing market demands. This panel will look at new revenue-generating opportunities, whether in the last-mile, enterprise, or mid-mile. What are the performance requirements that operators must meet to ensure the end-to-end quality demanded by different customer segments.

Including presentations from:

  • ‘Architecting and Monetizing the Next-Gen Network’ – Mike Emmendorfer, VP of Technology, Calix
  • ‘Decision Criterium: Endpoint Insights for Monetization Actions’ – Randy Van Buren, Senior Solutions Engineer, Motive
  • ‘Embracing Open Access to Expedite Fiber ROI’ – Jhuli Takhara, Product and Innovation Manager, Incognito Software Systems
  • TBA – Patrick McCaw, Engineer, Breezeline

Advancements in the Managed Home/Building

Tuesday, June 3 –  1pm – 2:10pm
Location: Bayou E

For competitive, operational and customer experience reasons, broadband service providers must consider in-home and in-building networks as extensions of their end-to-end systems. This panel will look what operators must do to overcome the challenges of managing these networks and the opportunities for adding new value-add services.

Including presentations from:

  • ‘Optimizing Digital Access One Dwelling at a Time’ – Joshua Edmonds, CEO, Digital C
  • ‘Intelligent Fiber to the Room’ – Dr Frank Effenberger, Fellow, Futurewei
  • ‘Guess what? The killer app is (better) Wi-Fi’ – Robert Lamb, Global VP, Sales & SVP Partnerships & Strategy, Aprecomm
  • ‘Education – The Key to Success’ – Teresa McGaughey, AVP Field Marketing, Calix & TJ Plumley, Chief Construction Officer, United Fiber

Broadband Service Provider Network Automation and AI

Tuesday, June 3 – 2:15pm – 3:30pm
Location: Bayou E

AI may be a buzzword, but its practical application offers the potential to help operators improve efficiency, offer new services, and improve the customer experience. This panel will look at what the end goal(s) for Broadband Service Providers should be as they formulate AI deployment plans. It will also look at the foundational efforts are required upfront so they can begin implementing those plans.

Including presentations from:

  • ‘AI-Powered Networks: From Automation to Full Autonomy’ – Sireesha Kora, Head of Controller Apps and AI, Fixed Broadband Networks, Nokia
  • ‘Empowering Network Automation with AI’ – Cody Calvert, Software Engineer III, Metronet
  • ‘AI-Driven E2E Optimization: The Role of Edge Agents and Telemetry’ – Eric Wulfsberg, Senior Director Product Management, Radisys
  • ‘Optimize Service Provider Value with Automation and AI’ – Phil Fine, Director Broadband Access Solutions, Ciena

The Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) has partnered with The Broadband Forum (BBF) to center this year’s demonstrations on one of three BBF specifications: BBF.247 (OLT/ONT Interoperability), TR-369 (User Services Platform) and/or BBF.398 for Wi-Fi Performance.

  • 247 certification program provides multi-vendor interoperability so that network operators have the ability to choose from differing network equipment (OLTs) and the fiber termination device inside the users building (ONUs) as each expands the range and reach of its network.
  • USP builds a network of controllers and agents to allow applications to manipulate service elements. This allows service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers and end-users to securely manage connected devices, carry out upgrades, for example, for critical security updates, and onboard new devices. Customer support is also improved by remote monitoring and troubleshooting of connected devices, services and home network links.
  • The TR-398 test plan provides testing coverage for RF performance, coverage, capacity & bandwidth, and stability / robustness.  A minimum set of test cases ensures all BBF.398 Carrier-Grade Wi-Fi devices meet a minimum performance bar needed by operators rolling out carrier grade services to their subscribers.
